There are a lot of ways that a college football program can lose a player these days. Thanks to the NCAA’s sweeping changes to add the NCAA transfer portal, athletes can leave a school without much consequence at any point in their career. Of course, there is the NFL Draft, which always takes a good chunk of players that have been in college for at least three years.
The point is, every college program faces plenty of attrition each offseason. What separates the consistently elite teams from the rest of the pack, though, is the ability to bounce back from those losses.
Be it via transfer portal additions or building the roster through high school recruiting, a good coach anticipates departures and makes sure the cabinet is fully stocked in response. That way, they can hit the ground running when their star players move on to further ventures.
