Brief History of Green Bay
Jean Nicolet, a French explorer, visited the area in 1634 and named it La Baye Verte (“The Green Bay”) because of the greenish color of the sea. Green Bay became the entryway to a trade route that connected the Fox, Wisconsin, and Mississippi rivers by 1655 when a fur-trading post was constructed. Around 1745, the Charles de Langlade family became the first permanent white settlers. The British defeated the French in 1763 and took control of Green Bay until 1783, when the American Revolution gave the Americans authority.
