Phil Foden has been crowned as the PFA’s Young Player of the Year following yet another stellar season for Manchester City across the 2021/22 campaign.
The Etihad Stadium’s academy graduate was integral to the club’s fourth Premier League title win in the last five seasons, retaining their English top-flight crown for the second time in Pep Guardiola’s reign at the football club.
Phil Foden’s latest triumph on a personal achievement front follows the England international being awarded the Premier League’s in-house award for the division’s best young player for the campaign, which the Stockport-born youngster picked up last month.
Across the course of the 2021/22 Premier League season, Phil Foden was utilised in a multitude of positions across Manchester City and Pep Guardiola’s front-line, but impressed many onlookers with his performances in the false-nine position.
The Manchester City manager had been forced into making last minute arrangements after Etihad officials failed to secure the signing of an immediate Sergio Aguero replacement, with Tottenham striker Harry Kane remaining at the London club despite a bid in excess of £100 million being launched.
Across 28 Premier League appearance throughout the previous English top-flight campaign, Phil Foden managed to register a total of nine goals plus a further five assists – averaging a goal contribution every 152.4 minutes of action.
Speaking after being crowned as the 2022 PFA Young Player of the Season, Phil Foden said, “I’m really honoured to be honest, especially to win it back-to-back. It shows that I’ve come a long way this year with the consistency of my game, and I’m really pleased to win it again.”
“All the best players in the world have got to show consistency and keep performing at the higher level, and this year I’ve just tried to do that and try and help my team as much as possible. I’ve been really happy with my performances this year.”
Foden continued, “Hopefully, I can win the main award in the future, but it’s all about taking small steps and improving. I always love winning individual awards, it’s just nice to look at and see how far you’ve come so, yeah, I’m really pleased.”
Speaking on Foden’s achievement, Manchester City director of football Txiki Begiristain said, “Phil helps embody the quality, drive and determination of every single player here at Manchester City.”
“He is a special player with a special talent, but one who always puts the team first and strives to be best he can be every single day. And to be recognised by his professional colleagues once again says everything about the way he is regarded by his peers.”
He continued, “It’s also another tribute to the amazing work of our Academy and the important role everyone there played in helping Phil make the progression through to our first team. He is an inspiration and shining example for every young player at the Club.”
“Everyone at the Club is delighted at this latest award and congratulates Phil on another magnificent achievement.”
Phil Foden has become Manchester City’s fourth recipient of the PFA Young Player of the Season award in the last five years, after Germany international winger Leroy Sane won the prize in 2017/18, before Raheem Sterling followed suit by winning the crown in 2018/19, and Foden won the award for 2020/21.
The last winner of the award to not come from Manchester City was Liverpool right-back, Trent Alexander-Arnold – who had been nominated for the latest edition of the esteemed prize but fell short after a voting process.
