GRAFTON— Last fall, the Taylor County Youth Football (TCYF) program took a hit and was unable to yield a Midget team for the older players in the area. However, this year the program has fully recovered with more than enough athletes to boast three full rosters.
According to representatives, the minimum number of players for each team is 15. The organization held sign-ups last month and is happy to announce that they have well surpassed that amount.
Excited to provide the opportunity to work with area youths on learning and excelling in the sport of football, the program has decided to host a supplementary sign-up day.
“Although we have more than enough players for each of our three age groups, we have had many people contacting us through our Facebook page wishing to sign-up,” shared a TCYF representative. “We have put them on the list, but another sign up would allow us to collect all their paperwork and money at the same time instead of trying to make individual arrangements with each of them.”
The secondary sign-up day will offer the opportunity for families who could not make to the original registration day to still be a part of the Bearcub family.
In-person registration for those who were put on the list has been scheduled for Sunday, June 12 in the Mary Battle Studio of Grafton High School, from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
And this event isn’t just for aspiring football players, but those wishing to cheer are welcome, as well.
Those needing to register should bring with them, a copy of the child’s birth certificate, along with the necessary Mountaineer Youth Football forms which include, conference registration, medical treatment permission and amateur minor athlete waiver and release of liability forms.
In addition, each player must have a medical release form, or sports physical, completed and turned in prior to the first practice, or the child will be unable to participate.

The program offers three age groups for both tackle football teams and cheerleading squads, with the Mighty Mites being opened to six- and seven-year-olds, while the Pee Wee team is geared for participants ages eight and nine and Midgets consist of 10- and 11-year-olds.
Exceptions to the age divisions apply for a ten-year-old wishing to play Pee Wee, they must be under 90 pounds to be eligible, and a 12-year-old may play for Midgets if they’re under 135 pounds.
Ages for eligibility are as of August 1, 2022.
Registration fees are $85 for each football player and $60 for each cheerleader. This fee includes shorts and a t-shirt for each football participant only. Cash or checks made payable to TCYFC will be accepted for payment.
