Newcastle United have reportedly joined the race to sign Borussia Dortmund attacker Ansgar Knauff, who has shone in 2022 since joining Eintracht Frankfurt on an 18-month loan deal.
According to Sport1, the Magpies are one of numerous clubs interested in signing the 20-year-old winger, who came through Dortmund’s academy and played a handful of senior games before being sent to Frankfurt in January for the next year and a half, and Knauff has exploded since the move.
The attacker played a key role in the Bundesliga side’s UEFA Europa League campaign, with Knauff scoring a screamer against FC Barcelona in a performance that was labelled as ‘frighting’ by the German media, with the forward also starting in the final against Rangers in Seville.
Whilst the likes of Newcastle are now interested in signing Knauff, there is no recall or exit clause in the youngster’s loan deal with Frankfurt, meaning that the Premier League side will only be able to move for the Dortmund prospect in 2023, where the attacker could be a superstar in the Bundesliga.
Compared to Manchester United’s £73m superstar attacker Jadon Sancho as per the Bundesliga’s official website, Knauff is tipped to have another huge season at Frankfurt, especially with UEFA Champions League football on the horizon for the German side, a competition that the winger has actually played in during his time with Dortmund.
Indeed, if Knauff is to follow in the footsteps of Sancho next season, the German top-flight could be in for a treat, yet for Newcastle, they should already be making the 20-year-old attacker a priority for the summer transfer window next year.
Newcastle must sign Knauff in 2023 if he enjoys a breakout season
Newcastle have been somewhat quiet in the transfer window this summer, yet 2023 could be a year where PIF go crazy in the market, and signing Knauff should be viewed as a priority for the club if the youngster is to enjoy a sensational season in Germany and in Europe.
After all, signing top young players will be the bedrock of any long-term plans Newcastle wish to make, and Knauff could be ideal for the future given the attacker’s incredible potential and impressive CV already in the senior game since breaking through with Dortmund and joining Frankfurt on loan.
