2021 Major League Soccer Cup champions New York City FC will host Liga MX side Atlas FC in this year’s edition of the Campeones Cup on September 14 at Yankee Stadium.
Atlas earned their spot in the one-match tournament after triumphing against Pachuca on Sunday during the 2022 Final to become back-to-back Apertura 2021 and Clausura 2022 season winners, and automatically earn the Campeón de Campeones title.
Campeones Cup stands as an annual clash that sees the champions of MLS and Liga MX face off. It was originally launched in 2018 as part of a larger partnership between MLS and Liga MX, with the purpose of developing and heightening the rivalry between the two leagues.
After previously pausing in 2020 due to Covid-19, the tournament returns in September.
Major League Soccer currently leads the overall leaderboard 2-1. Tigres UANL became the first ever champions after conquering Toronto FC 3-1 in the inaugural edition, but MLS came back stronger in 2019 with Atlanta United defeating Club America 3-2.
The American league took the trophy again in 2021 when Columbus Crew defeated Cruz Azul 2-0 at Lower.com Field.
