Manchester City are eyeing a shock move for Chelsea youngster Reece James, according to reports. It comes amid reported intentions to hold discussions over a brand new contract at the club.
The England international has had an impressive campaign, making 25 appearances with five goals and nine assists in the Premier League. That is all despite suffering a few huge injuries throughout the season too.
The 22-year-old has predominantly played as a wing-back, though he has also been utilised as a centre-back when needed. Discussing his performances, manager Thomas Tuchel said: “I would love to have two of Reece James, that would solve the problem, it’s like 50% towards wing-back and 45% towards the back three.

“It depends a little bit on how the opponent plays against us. Do we expect a lot of possession, how is their structure for their offensive transition. For this, it can sometimes be helpful for Reece to play in the back three and be the first guy to cover in the transition and to not be involved in the attack. We have his speed and physicality in the protection of the opponent’s counter-attack.”
It’s those performances that have reports suggesting the Blues are looking to offer him, and Mason Mount, a new deal once the takeover is completed. His current deal runs until 2025, though his importance has only escalated since signing his last one in 2020.
And that is only shown by interest from Manchester City, as the Daily Mail claims that Pep Guardiola is eyeing a move for the Cobham academy graduate. The report states that the Spaniard views James as the perfect replacement for Kyle Walker at the club.
Whether the move materialises remains to be seen, especially given the intention to keep him at the club that he grew up with and climbed the ranks through.
