Eintracht Frankfurt started their new season with a win in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.
The UEFA Europa League champions beat second division side, FC Magdeburg, 4-0.

Frankfurt broke the deadlock in the fourth minute of the game when Filip Kostić tore down the left wing and crossed the ball into the middle for an onrushing Daichi Kamada.
Kamada’s low shot beat the defenders and keeper and found the back of the net. Magdeburg had the perfect chance to equalise straight after when they were given a penalty.
Tuta carelessly brought down Leonardo Weschenfelder-Scienza in the box and Andreas Müller stepped up to take the penalty. His tame effort was beaten away by Frankfurt keeper Kevin Trapp and into the path of Leon Bell Bell. The player’s shot sadly was high and flew out after hitting the crossbar.

Frankfurt continued to push forward and could have doubled the lead in the 12th minute, but Ansgar Knauff’s shot was too tame. Knauff was involved in Leipzig’s second goal, though.
Mario Götze found Knauff with a long ball, but the midfielder’s shot was easily beaten away by Dominik Reimann in the goals. The ball found its way to Jesper Lindstrøm who composed himself and curled it into the back of the net.
Frankfurt went into the break with a 2-goal lead, but Magdeburg were unlucky not to have pulled one back before the break. The second half started with fireworks, but it wasn’t the skills of the players. Fans of both teams snuck fireworks into the ground and started firing flares onto the pitch.
The game went underway with a haze of smoke hovering around. Magdeburg were on fire during the second half, creating decent chances. Sadly their final touch always let them down.

Connor Krempicki and Moritz Kwarteng both missed great chances to score. Frankfurt took advantage and went 3-0 thanks to Kamada. Rafael Santos Borré Maury had his back to goal and laid the ball off to Kamada, who picked out the smallest gap to score in.
Frankfurt could have had a fourth towards the end, but Randal Kolo Muani headed just wide of the bar. Lucas Alario then banged in a fourth goal with the last kick of the game. Kolo Muani rounded the keeper and found Alario in the box. Alario then smashed into the top of the goal.
There was some slight controversy in the build-up as Kolo Muani stepped in the keeper’s hand as he rounded him.

The DFB-Pokal (or German Cup) is the second most prestigious tournament in German football, with the Bundesliga being the top prize. The tournament is equivalent to England’s FA Cup.

64 teams compete for the trophy, with 36 of these teams coming from the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 (2. Bundesliga). The top four finishers of Bundesliga 3 (3. Liga) also gain entry into the tournament, with 21 entries coming from the cup winners of regional football associations.
The three remaining slots are then filled by the three regional associations with the most men’s teams.
