AUGUSTA, MI– As the morning sunlight bathed a field filled with white markers and stones, volunteers big and small gathered to face a daunting task: planting thousands of flags at Fort Custer’s National Cemetery Grounds.
There volunteers placed American flags at veteran graves across fifteen plus sections of the cemetery, which has an estimated 30,000 sites.
With the help of local football teams, multiple Boy Scout troops, motorcycle crews and supporting family and friends, the feat was completed in about two hours.
“People want the veterans’ legacy to live on,” Cemetery Director Andre Logan said. “So, for them [the community] to bring their kids and grandkids out every year, that’s passing on that legacy to future generations.”
The flag-planting was done in preparation for the Fort Custer’s Annual Memorial Day Service, which is set for 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29.
