The 2021-22 season may only have just finished but planning can start in earnest for the new campaign when the Premier League fixtures are released later this month.
Here’s what you need to know about a key date in the new season calendar — and the workings of the ‘fixture computer’.
When are the 2022-23 Premier League fixtures released?
The Premier League fixtures for the 2022-23 season will be released at 9am BST on Thursday June 16.
The order of the 380 fixtures will be announced at that time (yes, everyone plays each other twice), but the broadcasters will subsequently shuffle some of the days and kick-off times in each match round.
When will the TV fixtures be announced?
Last summer, Sky Sports and BT Sport revealed their televised picks for the opening weekend on the same day that the fixtures were released.
The Premier League has yet to confirm its live match announcement dates for this term but in 2021-22 — when the season started a week later than the forthcoming campaign — it confirmed the televised fixtures for August and September at the start of July.
How does the fixture computer actually work?
The Premier League says a “complex process” starts after the EFL play-off finals, when the composition of each division is finally known.
Clubs are placed in a ‘pairing grid’ to define the dates when they will play their home games; Everton and Liverpool, for example, obviously can’t play at home on the same day.
When the computer knows who is away and who is at home on every date across the season, it can then “mix clubs up randomly” to determine which matches take place on which date.
The software can also take a club’s previous schedule — and any apparent gripes — into consideration.
“If there are issues with a club’s fixtures one year, you try to take that into account in the next year and try to ensure if there is an undesirable set of fixtures, they don’t get it two seasons in a row,” Glenn Thompson of Atos — the company that helps compile the list — told the Premier League’s website ahead of the last reveal.
“You can’t satisfy everyone. It’s a compromise across all clubs.”
When does the season actually start?
The Premier League has confirmed the season will start on Saturday, August 6, 2022, though the 2021-22 campaign kicked off with a Friday night fixture so the opening game could be on August 5.
The traditional Community Shield curtain-raiser will take place at Leicester’s King Power Stadium on July 30, with Manchester City facing Liverpool.
How does the World Cup affect the Premier League?
The domestic season has been adjusted to accommodate the World Cup in Qatar.
The final round of matches before the tournament — match round 16 — will be played over the weekend of November 12-13 and the league will resume on Boxing Day — eight days after the World Cup final.
The Premier League will this season conclude on May 28 2023.
